Why Should We Apply Kumkum Tilak On Forehead

Kumkum is the form of Shakti, applying it brings purity to our body. Human life is considered to be sacred, after being born as many creatures we get a human body. Our body is comprised of different parts and each part is worshipped with a certain god. Similarly, our forehead is considered as brahmasthan worshipped with Lord Brahma. As red color is used to worship Lord Brahma, it should be covered with tilak which is red in color i.e Kumkum

Sun rays should not touch the forehead. Our life form is secretly stored in the middle of the body where Anahata chakra is located (near the heart).

If we apply kumkum with the ring finger, it is considered to be peace, if we use middle finger then it increases life and if we apply with tongue, it resembles power. If we use forefinger then we attain spiritual empowerment. Also based on yoga and acupuncture when we press on our forehead while applying kumkum, it activates chakra related to knowledge and also increases the flow of blood to facial muscles. In other words, we worship Lord Brahma who is a god of knowledge by applying his favorite color red i.e Kumkum.

In ancient days kumkum is prepared from turmeric powder, after making powder they used to add ink and turn it to red. Therefore the application of kumkum helps in killing bacteria. Instead of applying modern gum made stickers which are made with artificial chemicals and paper it is good to use kumkum.

Always applying kumkum at one place where Adnya chakra is located will increase the flow of positive energy by awakening Atma-shakti (soul-energy) and she gets protected from negative energies. That’s why we consider Kumkum with Shakti in Sanatana Hindu Culture.
