Significance of Poli Swargam Deepam during Karthika Masam

Poli Swarga Deepam is a kind of lighting lamp during the month of Karthika which represents the end of the auspicious month.

Karthika Masam is one of the mythological months where we find devotees take a holy bath near rivers and light lamps.

Every day of this month is auspicious, Amavasya (new moon) devotes lighten lamp with a name poli swargam (one of the rituals performed especially in the Andhra region).

Story 1:
Poli is one of the daughters-in-law in a combined family. Her aunt used to get jealous of her daughter-in-law for her devotedness towards god. She used to create obstacles to stop her worship, during one occasion she tried to stop her lighting lamp in the month of Karthika.

She gave allotted daily work in such a way that she could not complete them on time, even then poli used to complete her work and lighten lamp. She used to make cotton and light using the butter and cover the lamp with the help of a basket so that the lamp will not off because of wind and be hidden.

Seeing her worship gods wanted to take her to heaven under the sight their family and village people remarking her worship towards god.

Story 2:

There used to live a family whose daily work is laundry. They had 7 sons and all got married, one of the daughters-in-law named Poli or Polamma came from a poor family but has good family values. Because of this, aunt used to allocate all works to poli and visit river banks to offer lamps during Kartika masa.

On the last day of the month, poli wanted to offer a lamp at least on the last day. So she had a head bath and took little cotton from the plant beside her house and make the cotton wick. She used the butter made leftover to the sick which was made last night. She heated butter to get ghee and used it as oil. Made a lamp with the leftover rice powder and lighted lamp by saying “Oh lord Narayana I cannot do anything more than this, please bless me the value of lighting whole month” and offered light on the leaf and left in the water.
