Why do we light a lamp?

Image
We find lighting up a lamp daily in almost every house in India. We start every auspicious occasion with lighting up of lamp. In some houses we find lighting up of lamp once during morning and in some instances we find twice a day. If a lamp is lighted continuously then it is called Akhanda Deepam.    Lightning removes darkness and ignorance. It brings knowledge, in other words “Chaitanya”. Because light removes darkness and illuminates knowledge, it is worshipped as lord.    We all know health and wealth can be gained, as well as lost in any part of life. They are not everlasting, but knowledge is everlasting, it cannot be lost. As we discussed light illuminates knowledge, knowledge is everlasting inner wealth, through which we can achieve success and accomplish all our wishes. We light up the lamp and bow to it, which resembles the fact that knowledge is the greatest forms of wealth.    You might have a doubt that even tube light also removes darkness and why should we light on

Later on Lord Vishnu takes human avatar and starts meditation on Venkatadri.    During the period of meditation, there will be formation of mud around him. In order to serve food to Lord Vishnu, cow named Kamadhenu starts pouring milk into the mud formation and relieves hunger of Lord Vishnu.    One day protector of the cow gets doubt on the cow as it is was giving less milk. He follows the cow and sees that the cow is pouring its milk into the mud. He gets angry and tries to hit with a bamboo stick on the head of the cow.    Lord Vishnu realizes the incident and tries to escape the cow and gets hurt. The hurt was below the beard. Why should we do pradakshanas around temple

Image
Why Should we do pradakshanas around temple In the word pradakshana, "pra" means destruction of our sins... "dha” means to blessing for our wishes... "ksha" means to give good birth in our next succession birth... "na" means remove our ignorance or possess divine knowledge.     Without our notice, when moving around the temple, there is a great hidden meaning in the word pradakshana. In ancient, even lord Ganesh circumambulate d around lord Shiva and Prvathi and attained the boon equivalent to rotate around whole universe. So when we are rotating around god, it means we are getting an equivalent boon of rotating whole universe, it becomes "atma pradhakshana". It means oh god! I am putting my whole concentration on you, believing and implementing your sacred divine words and praying you with whole heartedly.
