Importance of Dhaksinavruta Shankam and Namaskar Format to Please God

Importance of Dhaksinavruta Shankam

We pray to lord Vishnu as “Megha shyamam pethakosiyavasam srivatsangam kosubodhbasitangam”. Our sastras say dhaksinavruta shankam (shell) is very sacred. Whenever we use that shell in our temple room, it should not be submerged in ordinary water.

We should pour sacred waters like Ganga, Yamuna, Narmada, Tungabadra, Saraswati, Krishna and Kaveri river water. Upon storing sacred waters, if we apply sandalwood, kumkum, and flowers to the shell and pray to it we will be blessed with Lord Vishnu. Also whoever consumes sacred water as thirdham every day they will be blessed with health and wealth.    That is why we find priests offering thirdham in shells.

Namaskar Format to Please God

Also according to archana format, when we offer naivedyam to god, we should follow certain steps. First, we need to clean the floor with water, offer naivedyam on a banana leaf, placed on the right hand side of god. We should do namaskar 7, 5 or 3 times with devotion to all gods.

Men should do sastanga namaskar (prayer offered by sleep on the floor) and ladies should pray on their knees (they should not do sastanga namaskar). When we do Namaskar by closing both the hands, pancha bhoothas which are fire, air, earth, water, and the sky will be there on five fingers. Whoever follows this format will be blessed by the lord.
