What are the specific flowers offered to god
We find many beautiful flowers on this planet but there are specific flowers to be offered to our deity. Flowers play a prominent role during puja or any other occasions. There are few flowers which should not be offered to the god and some of them have a significant role in puja.

When it comes to Lord Shiva, jilledu (madar ), ganneru (Plumerias), maredu (bael), tammy (palm), uttareni leaves (prickly chaff), Jammi (Bulrush) leaves and flowers and nalla kaluva flowers are considered as best to offer.

Dasani, mankena, ndanti, mogali, maalathi, kumkuma madi, etc. flowers are considered as not fit for puja. Also, any flower which doesn’t have stick below the flower is considered as non-fit.

Each flower is dedicated to a particular god/ goddess.

  • Maredu (bael) it is allocated to goddess Lakshmi
  • Nalla Kaluva (black lotus) is for goddess Parvathi
  • White lotus is for Lord Kumara Swami
  • Kamal flower (Nelumbo nucifera) is dedicated for Lord Shiva
  • White jilledu (madar) flower is for education goddess Saraswati
  • Kondavagu is for Lord Brahma
  • Karaveera (Nerium indicum) flower for Lord Ganesh
  • Shivamalli – Lord Vishnu
  • Fragrance emitting flowers – Gowri



Although few flowers are eligible to perform puja, some of them are restricted for a particular deity.

Flowers to avoid for particular deity:


  • Maha Vishnu – Akshintalu(rice grains mixed with turmeric powder)
  • Lord Ganesh with tulasi (basil) leaves
  • Tamala tree flowers – goddess Saraswati
  • Malle (jasmin) – Bhairava
  • Tammy flower – goddess Lakshmi
  • Mogali flower – lord Shiva
  • Maredu flower – Lord Surya
